How do I redact a PDF for free without Adobe?
Upload your PDF, enter the text to redact (names, account numbers, addresses, or any sensitive phrase), and click 'Redact PDF'. Every occurrence is permanently removed and replaced with a black bar.
Is redaction permanent?
Yes. The text data is removed from the PDF's internal structure — it cannot be recovered by selecting, copying, or any other method. This is true redaction, not just a visual overlay.
Why can't I just put a black box on top of text?
Annotation black boxes (added in most free PDF viewers) only cover the text visually. The underlying text remains in the file and can be copied. True redaction removes the data entirely.
Can I redact a whole phrase or number pattern?
Yes. Enter any text string — a name, email address, phone number, or account number — and the tool removes every occurrence across all pages.
Can I redact a scanned PDF?
If your PDF is scanned (image-based), text cannot be detected without OCR. Run OCR PDF first to create a searchable text layer, then redact.
